Final Rough Draft DPS

this is my final draft of my DPS and the only thing I changed is the title and the font colour of the seconf paragraph to make it match to colours of the rest of the magazine.

Final Rough Draft Contents

This is my final draft of the contents page where I made it more like a real contents page by making the font the same colour as the font on the cover so they match and added more topics in.

Final Rough Draft Cover

This is my updated and final draft of which I used feedback from the previous draft to make this one more likeable to my target audience. I added more headings and added the full name of the magazine.

Audience Feedback Of Digital Mock Up

This is my prezi do explore audiences feedback on my digital mock ups of the cover, contents and DPS pages. I then took from the feedback what I need to change for my first drafts and added it to the prezi. I did this as my audience is the most important thing to think about when producing my magazine as they are the ones that would potentially buy it if it were an actual product. I found that some things really worked for some members of my audience but not for others, therefore I put the most common comments onto my presentation because it is more important to please a majority of my audience rather than a select few.

Music Magazine Digital Mock Up DPS

This is my rough digital DPS which I made to see how I wanted to lay out the text as I wasn't sure if I wanted to do it in columns or paragraphs. I decided to go with 3 columns as I though it looked more professional and would be more appealing to the audiences eye than one large chunk of text. However I wasn't too sure on how to present the title and so is something I plan to change in the future as I feel it doesn't seem bold enough for a rock magazine.

Music Magazine Digital Mock Up Contents Page

This is my rough digital contents page mock up. I made this to see what layout works best and I found that text one side in a strip works best as it is clear and allows room for images the other side. I also explored the use of the colour orange to add some colour and quirk to the page but still be clear to read and understand.

Music Magazine Digital Mock Up Cover

This is my rough digital draft of my rock magazine. I did this in order to see how I want to lay out my cover and see what colours work together. I wanted to minimalize the amount of content on the page as I didn't want it looking clustered or messy. I stuck to a black and white image as it works well with my genre of rock and it allows me to experiment more with font colours.

Initial Ideas/Treatment

MAGAZINE TITLE- Why have you chosen it? How might it impact on the concept of your magazine?

For my magazine title I wanted to use the title ‘The Loudest Silence’ but it was too long and not catchy enough for a magazine title so then decided to abbreviate it to ‘TLS’ which is easy and catchy but still has a link to my magazine due to the meaning of it. This shows my magazine as a younger and alternative kind of rock music magazine which is the kind of rock I’m trying to go for.

MUSIC GENRE FOR YOUR MAGAZINE- What is your primary genre?  Why is it going to be appealing?

My primary genre is rock, which is a mix of traditional rock and roll and pop. However I want to put a small alternative twist on it to appeal more to my target audience’s age range of 15-25. But still mention traditional rock music as well as more rock pop/indie.

UNIQUE SELLING POINT- What will be your USP? Why will this appeal to your target audience?

My unique selling point would be that my magazine will have a wide range of rock genres and bands/artists for example I will mention bands like the Beatles and the rolling stones but also mention bands like panic at the disco and the cab which put an alternative twist on their rock music. I think this will appeal to my target audience as people of a teen/young adult age still listen to old classics but tend to be more drawn to music of their time as it is all around them, therefore I want to express this in my magazine.

COSTUMES AND PROPS- What props and costumes are you going to use? Why? How will they appeal to your target audience?

Costume- for my male models I want them to be wearing skinny jeans, preferably distressed (either black or dark denim) with plain black or white T-shirts or T-shirts of rock bands. With plain black plimsoll/canvas type shoes and either a dark flannel or black hoody. For their hair I would want it swooped to the side and straight. For makeup they would have black pencil eyeliner on their waterline of their eye and a pale powder or foundation to take some colour from their face. For my female models I would want them to wear either black distressed denim jeans or shorts, a black pull over hoody (preferably cropped) or a fitted black vest top with a baggy black leather jacket or hoody. For shoes  they should wear thick souled canvas shoes, thick black choker round their neck and for make-up they need to have black flicked eyeliner above the lash line and pencil eyeliner on the waterline, they need pale foundation and a really dark red/purple lipstick. For hair they just need it down and naturally flowing.

This should appeal to my audience as it’s the typical dress sense for my target audience of both male and female and so therefore they can relate to the models of my magazine and make them feel more of a part of society.

Props- I want to use some red autumn leaves in the background of my images to give the image more natural colour. Want to use large speakers, electric guitars and acoustics guitars.

This would appeal to my target audience as rock bands typically use guitars and oversized speakers.

LOCATIONS- What location(s) are you going to use for your magazine photography? Why? How will they appeal to your target audience?

For locations I plan on using a room with a large old-fashioned window and door firstly to bring in natural lighting and secondly to use in the back ground of my images do express distance and detachment from society to then go on to show rock as an individual society. I also plan on doing shots in a room like this so I have complete control over lighting to make sure my images rent over exposed or are too dark. This will appeal to my target audience as it will express individuality.

TARGET AUDIENCE- Who are your primary target audience (Age, gender, interests etc)? How did you decide this? What will appeal to them?

My target audience is all genders between the age of 15-25 who are interested in all themes within rock music and like both classic and alternative rock. I made this decision as majority of people I know are around this description so I can get easy insight and feedback for my magazine.

What fonts and effects are you going to use? Why are they the best choice? How will they appeal to your TA?

For my font I want a clear and bold font to make it easy to read and it stand out from the page however I want it to be slightly ridged and sharp to make it edgy and suit the theme of rock music.

Audience Profile

This is a typical audience member for the type of rock magazine I'm aiming to make. However I am aiming my magazine at both genders but nearly all factors would apply to a male audience member as well apart for a few small differences.

Magazine Font

did a survey asking my specific target audience (all genders aged 15-25). Out of 12 people the font above was the most popular for a rock magazine.

Magazine Titles

Magazine Title Ideas

Sound Rock

The Loudest Silence

Eternal Rock

R & R

Crunch!

Rock

I asked a total of 12 members of my magazines target audience what name they would be drawn to on a rock magazine and got multiple different views. 2 people voted for sound rock, 5 people voted for The Loudest Silence, 4 people voted for Eternal Rock and 1 person voted for R & R. So this meant that the clear winner was The Loudest Silence however it was the least suitable out of the options due to it being too long. Therefore I came up with the idea to abbreviate it and so now my magazine will be called...

Mood Board

This mood board was created so that I had a range of ideas and colours and themes on one page. This allows me to see what looks good together and what doesn't and creates a more visual theme to what my final magazine will be like.

Contents Page Analysis

Contents page analysis

Kerrang- this contents page has both a title saying what the page is about (contents) and the title of the magazine (Kerrang). It sticks to the colour use of black for a background but also adds a bottom half of whit where majority of the informational text is. The font of the magazine title is the same as it is on the cover and is in the same colour. The information is mainly kept to the bottom half of the page however there are small amounts at the top next to small images to inform what the images are about, however while doing this it still slightly sticks to having 3 rows. It has page numbers next to each piece of information however it only has the number and not the word page. It doesn’t have any large empty gaps, and they managed to put an advertisement to their magazine subscription on the page therefore making good use of any extra space. Its main image on the contents page is still making direct mode of address but only takes up the first half of the page.

Classic Rock- this contents page only has the title of the page (contents) and not the title of the actual magazine. The colour of this page contrasts from their typical black front covers as the whole page is a very light grey/white colour. There is only one image and it is of a man facing away which I have not seen in any other magazines. The image purely is of the back of a person with a guitar over their shoulder. It does not stick to the rule of thirds as it only has 2 separate sections as all the page information and text is to the right of the page. It is much organised and un-cluttered and actually has a few big gaps where extra information or advertisements could be. Once again it has the page numbers next to sections but not the word page.

Rock Sound- this contents page doesn’t actually have a title saying contents however does say ‘main features’ which still explains it is telling you information within the magazine. Also it has the actual name of the magazine in the same font as on the cover. The main image is once again the only image on the page however unlike classic rock, the background is black which shows consistency between themes. The main image is giving direct address and only shows knees and above of the person in the picture. At the top of the page underneath the title of the magazine, it has the date of the magazine release. It slightly sticks to the rule of thirds but is hard to see it as all the information is once again on the right hand side of the page in an organised fashion. Therefore meaning there is once again a lot of wasted space. And the page numbers are shown without the word page again.

This is my 3 contents page analysis on my chosen magazine genre. I mainly focused on the structure and style of the contents pages and tried to compare the 3 against each other.

Final College Magazine Evaluation

My evaluation of my final college magazine cover. In this I answered 5 evaluation questions to explain why I made the decisions I did when making my college magazine and to show what I used to create it

Music Magazine Analysis

Rock Music Magazine Cover Analysis

Rock Sound- for this magazine they have a rock band all giving direct mode of address in a black room causing the background behind the people to be completely black for its cover image. It has the masthead at the top of the page in a large, bold and white font allowing it to stand out against the black background. Some of the masthead is covered by the band member at the front. The fact that one of the band members is further forward in this image suggests that he is the main singer. Above the masthead however is a strapline which says what you get free with the magazine which I haven’t noticed on any other magazines I have analysed so far. The magazine has 5 different cover lines and strap lines which allows the reader to have a wide amount of knowledge to what’s in the magazine. They use 4 different text colours in order to make all text visible no matter where it is on the page. The magazine also has the basic assets such as a bar code, price line and date line however it has all 3 in the same place on the magazine which doesn’t occur on all front covers.

Classic Rock- for this magazine there is only one singer on which suggests he is a single artist. He is giving direct mode of address however you can only see half of his face due to the entire image being edited to being black and white. The fact the image is black and white means that the background is completely black. The masthead is once again at the top of the cover page in a large, bold and white font however the word ‘classic’ is accompanied by 2 stars either side of the word and is in a much smaller font than the word ‘rock’ which represents that the word ‘rock’ is the key word and theme to the magazine. This magazine too has small text above the masthead but this time stating a quote from a newspaper about its own success. Again the magazine has 5 or more cover lines and straplines allowing the reader to know some of its contents before purchasing and opening the item and allowing them to know if it is a kind of magazine they want to be reading. It uses only 2 colours for its font which allows the reader to tell the difference between the strap lines and cover lines and keeps the magazine very plain and simple. It too has a bar code, price line and date line all in the same place in the magazine.

Kerrang!- This magazine also only has one person in the main image who is giving direct address however in this covers image it is in colour and behind the man it looks as if there is a light shining in what looks like a dark room. This means that unlike the other two magazines this one has mainly a black background but with some white towards the middle. Similar to the other two magazines the masthead is at the top of the cover page in a large, bold and white font with a person’s head covering the middle of the word. Also similar to the others is that once again there is text above the masthead but this time stating a chance to take part in a competition. This magazine differs from the first two as it also has other images inserted onto the cover which are small and bordered and are related to topics mention in the strap lines and cover lines. The magazine uses 4 different text colours which makes the magazine more colourful and bold and appealing to the eye. Just like the other two the magazine also has a bar code, price line and date line in the same place.
